Campus Research Security, Shared Workspaces and Personal Safety
There are several actions we should all take to ensure our personal safety and the security of our research.
Campus Security Guidance
There are a number of small easy actions we can all take to ensure we’re creating a safe and secure working and teaching environment.
- When entering or leaving any restricted areas, do not allow others to tailgate into the space behind you.
- In accordance with our clear desk policy, please ensure any personal belongings, and files or hardware containing any confidential or sensitive information, are removed from your desk and/or securely stored when you leave work or are away from your desk for an extended period.
- When leaving at the end of the day, please take the time to ensure shared storage cupboards are securely locked and that keys aren’t left inside the units.
For more information review the Information Governance Office’s guidance on securing information when working remotely or on campus.
Shared Workspaces
The National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) has developed guidance on shared workspaces. It is designed to encourage basic security practices and enhance your security awareness. It contains practical and accessible protective security advice for both users and providers of shared workspaces.
The Information Governance Office have also prepared relevant advice on protecting data in an open plan environment.
Personal Safety
For personal safety all staff members, as well as students, are able to download and use the University’s SafeZone app a wide-ranging safety tool that can quickly connect you with security, first aid, or emergency response teams.
Lone working outside of our core working hours (8am-6pm) is subject to completion of a risk assessment and line/manager supervisor approval for all colleagues. If working late, you should also ensure you’ve familiarised yourself with our lone working and personal safety guidance documents.
If you ever suspect an issue or need to report an incident, the Campus Support and Security team are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 0161 306 9966 – this number is available on the back of your staff ID card.
