Trusted Research
What is Trusted Research?
Trusted Research is a set of guidelines designed to uphold the integrity of research collaboration. It addresses potential risks in research and innovation, empowering researchers to collaborate with confidence.
Trusted Research supports informed decision-making regarding potential risks, and protects researchers and staff from theft, misuse, or exploitation. It helps ensure compliance with applicable legislation and is particularly relevant for international collaborations, STEM subjects, dual-use technologies, emerging technologies, and commercially sensitive research areas.
While The University of Manchester encourages collaboration and open research, it is essential for researchers and PS staff to be risk aware. Trusted Research provides guidance to help mitigate risks and make informed decisions.
What do researchers need to do?
When planning a new project, especially one that includes an international collaboration, we ask researchers do the following:
- Use the Research Risk Profiler to identify potential risks, and understand key process requirements relevant to your project.
- Familiarise yourself with the Policy on Responsible International Research Collaborations.
- Follow the guidance on the StaffNet Research Security hub as necessary.
Where can I find out more?
- You can find further guidance and information on the University’s policies and procedures on the StaffNet Research Security hub.
- The National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) Trusted Research campaign provides information on important subjects such as personal data, research data, export controls, intellectual property and cyber security. They have created a series of short videos covering Trusted Research, including subjects such as Reputational Risk, the National Security Investment Act and Intellectual Property
