Fund to Support Curiosity-Driven Research
A new fund to support curiosity-driven research
Research Committee announces its second new investment towards the delivery of From Manchester, for the world.
The commitment to advancing excellent, original curiosity-driven research which drives discovery is one of the foundations of the University’s new ten-year strategy. Researchers can now apply for funding to connect and collaborate on ambitious, novel and exploratory ideas which have the potential to scope, seed and grow new research directions and breakthroughs. The new flexible fund will provide support for ideas generation, grant writing and network building.
The fund complements other strategic internal research investments in pump-priming interdisciplinary research and support with preparing applications for Horizon Europe.
Introduction and Aims
Curiosity-driven research underpins our understanding of the world, providing the foundations for transformative applications, new discoveries and interpretations, and innovative methodologies across all disciplines.
The aim of the funding is to provide researchers with opportunities to connect and collaborate with colleagues and networks on emerging and novel research areas which have the potential to advance knowledge, build deeper understanding, uncover new research directions and seed the next wave of breakthroughs.
This is the first time funding is available and is initially offered across three streams to which you can apply to one:
- Internal ideation networks: Up to £5,000 is available to bring together colleagues from across the University to discuss emerging research areas and uncover new research directions in preparation for creating cross- disciplinary teams for external research funding applications.
- External networks: Up to £25,000 is available to bring together world-leading teams of researchers to advance knowledge, build deeper understanding, and seed the next wave of breakthroughs and support preparation of external research funding applications. Preference will be given to applications which involve a network with North America and/or Europe.
- Focused time for discussion and writing: Up to £10,000 is available for a small and defined group of colleagues to discuss and assess the readiness of their research ideas and progress the preparation of external research funding applications.
How to Apply
Applicants should read the information about who can apply, what we’re looking for, eligible costs, and the assessment and approval process and complete and submit the online application form by 4pm on Wednesday 22 April 2026.
Applicants must identify which funding stream they are applying for in the application form.
Any questions about the call can be directed to rst@manchester.ac.uk.

- Deep discussion amongst a small defined group to assess the readiness of their ambitious, bold research ideas and insights for external research funding applications.
All applications are expected to be underpinned by excellent research and lead to advances in curiosity-driven research. All applications will be expected to outline how they will deliver distinctive outcomes, such as:
- Making a discovery that upends current thinking.
- Testing an unconventional idea at a disciplinary interface.
- Opening novel research paradigms for further exploration in the longer-term.
- Demonstrating proof of principle.
- Establishing feasibility of a new approach.
- Establishing a new cross-disciplinary collaboration.
- Submitting large external research funding applications.
The funding opportunity will not cover:
- Support for research including research already carried out, writing up previous research, literature surveys.
- Training and conference attendance.
- Preparation and production of materials such as curriculum materials and software development.
- Equipment purchase, instrument access or infrastructure costs.
- Incremental developments or proposals which focus on user-driven challenges.
Eligible Costs and Duration
Applications are invited for funding for a period of 12 months from 1 August 2026. All funds must be spent by 31 July 2027.

Application, Approval and Assessment Process
The application form asks applicants to:
- Summarise the aims and objectives of the programme of activity.
- Outline the vision for the proposed work and explain how the programme of activity will advance knowledge, build deeper understanding, uncover new research directions and seed the next wave of breakthroughs.
- Describe the approach being taken to deliver the vision including the underpinning research that is the basis of the programme of activity.
- Outline a programme of activity.
- Provide details of the applicant and the team and their capability to deliver the proposed programme of activity.
- Identify expected outcomes, for example,
- Making a discovery that upends current thinking.
- Testing an unconventional idea at a disciplinary interface.
- Opening novel research paradigms for further exploration in the longer-term.
- Demonstrating proof of principle.
- Establishing feasibility of a new approach.
- Establishing a new cross-disciplinary collaboration.
