Tomorrow is World Car Free Day!

21 Sep 2026

World Car Free Day is a chance to think about how we travel and the difference that choosing alternatives to the car can make – for our health, our wellbeing, our environment and the places where we live and work.

Here at the University, just over 20% of our colleagues’ commuter journeys are made by car, but these journeys contribute to more than half of our staff commuting emissions. Swapping even a few car journeys for walking, cycling, public transport or carpooling can help us build more movement into our day, support our wellbeing, save money and reduce congestion, air pollution and carbon emissions.

So, to mark the day, we're kicking off our biggest push yet to help our colleagues Drive Less this October – with incentives, offers and practical support to help you get moving, try something different and save money along the way.

Drive less this October

Throughout October, we’ll be bringing together lots of ways to help you use your car less – whether you’re ready to ditch the car altogether or just want to swap a journey or two.

There’ll be:

  • Cycling – support, discounts, challenges and events
  • Walking, running & wheeling – ways to get moving more and have fun
  • Public transport – offers to help make bus and train travel easier and cheaper
  • Carpooling – share the journey if you need to drive
  • Challenges & incentives – plenty of reasons to give something new a try
  • Resources & support – practical things to make leaving the car at home easier

October will be a whole month of opportunities to try something different.

You don't have to change your entire commute. You don't have to give up your car. Even one less car journey is one less car journey.

We'll be sharing more over the coming weeks, so keep an eye out and get ready to Drive Less this October. Look out for our next communication at the start of October, when we’ll be focusing on cycling to start with.
