University and Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity, EDF strengthen their partnership – to tackle some of the most pressing energy challenges of our time and help deliver Manchester 2035.

Our University has renewed its five-year strategic partnership with EDF, Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity, to nurture future talent and advance research across nuclear energy, renewables, energy networks and electrification technologies. 

The partnership is a perfect example of our Manchester 2035 strategy in action, delivering on research impact, innovation and the student experience here at Manchester.

At the heart of the collaboration is the Modelling and Simulation Centre (MaSC), which has brought together students, researchers and EDF staff to apply high-level numerical methods and physical modelling to challenges in fluid dynamics and structural mechanics, supporting the development of state-of-the-art computational methods for EDF’s current and future nuclear technology portfolio.

The collaboration has delivered significant benefits for both the University and EDF’s nuclear research programme, while co-funded PhD studentships have supported research in a number of important areas.

The partnership has also attracted additional funding, including through the UKRI/EPSRC Industrial Doctoral Landscape Award, while fostering a strong exchange of knowledge through technical working groups, consultancy projects and EDF staff embedded within the University.

Over the next five years, the partnership will continue to broaden its scope, with a focus on further advances in nuclear energy, renewables, digital innovation, electrification and other exploratory projects.

Developing ideas, technologies and talent
