AI at the University of Manchester: New Essential Course for all colleagues
19 Mar 2026
Many colleagues are already using AI tools in their work. As these technologies become more widespread, it is our responsibility as a University to ensure everyone has the knowledge they need to use AI confidently and responsibly.
This new Essential Course will provide colleagues with an overview of AI and the key considerations when using it. It is designed to help you to use and navigate emerging AI tools safely, securely and responsibly.
The training does not focus on any specific AI tool, nor does it serve as a technical guide. Instead, it offers the essential background knowledge needed to help you make the most of any tool, providing a broad introduction and overview of AI and ensuring that everyone has the foundational knowledge required to use it responsibly.
This course is required for all colleagues, and it sits alongside other Essential Courses for all Colleagues.
Complete the Course
The AI at the University of Manchester Essential Course takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. You can take the course now on MyDevelopment.
Microsoft 365 Copilot roll out
Earlier this year, we announced that all colleagues and students will be provided with a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence, alongside dedicated training. While this Essential Course does not offer tool-specific instruction, the forthcoming roll out will be accompanied by a comprehensive package of learning resources. Further information about the roll out of Microsoft 365 Copilot and associated training will be released in the coming weeks.
