Make our campus safe for Mancunian hedgehogs!

Get involved with our new Hedgehog Action Group

As set out in the University's Environmental Sustainability Strategy, our purpose to advance education, knowledge and wisdom for the good of society needs to be applied with more passion than ever to protecting and enhancing our environment. This needs to occur at all scales; from fighting climate change globally, to caring for the species in our own back garden.
We are delighted to offer colleagues the chance to get involved with our mission locally by joining the newest colleague network: The Hedgehog Action Group.
Hedgehogs are an iconic British species that are vulnerable to extinction due to hedgerow loss, habitat fragmentation and road casualties. However, city dwelling hedgehog numbers appear to be recovering after a long period of decline, and our university can play its part in helping these hog’s recovery.
In collaboration with Hedgehog Friendly Campus, our colleague Hedgehog Action Group will complete activities from HFC’s official toolkit like:
- Hands-on activities including litter picks, hog surveys, nest site creation
- Engagement work such as creating posts, or writing blogs to promote hedgehog wellbeing, the risks they face, and the work we’ll be doing.
- Organising activities such as workshops, surveys/audits and hedgehog campaigns.
The group will make the most of individual’s strengths and work together to make our campus one that protects our Mancunian hedgehogs. Members will meet once a month to tackle activities from the toolkit, collaborate with student ambassadors, and work to achieve the university’s very first qualification by next year.
If you are interested in being a part of the group, please get in touch with es@manchester.ac.uk, ahead of the first meeting in October.
