Dr Vicki Woodward

Dr Vicki Woodward is to lead the emerging AI Skunkworks team – a group based within Unit M, the University’s innovation unit. Working at the heart of the University’s AI Transformation Programme, they are committed to ensuring that AI use is ethical, inclusive, innovative and impactful.

Reporting directly to the University Executive, the AI Skunkworks team is dedicated to accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence across teaching, research, and operations by rapidly prototyping working solutions. Under Dr Woodward’s direction, the team will also advise on AI investments, develop best-practice guidelines, and support staff and students through AI upskilling programmes – championing a culture of experimentation, creativity and responsible AI use.

Professor Chris Taylor, AVP Digital Strategy and Lead for AI Transformation, said: “Vicki's appointment marks an exciting milestone for the University. The Skunkworks team is crucial to our AI transformation strategy, working across established structures to drive innovation. Vicki has the background and experience to provide the leadership that will be critical in grasping opportunities and avoiding the potential pitfalls.”

CEO of Unit M, Professor Lou Cordwell added: “We are delighted to welcome Vicki to the University and to the extended Unit M leadership team. Vicki brings a wealth of commercial innovation experience that will be invaluable as we head into delivery of the Manchester 2035 strategy. We’re looking forward to collaborating with her and the wider AI Skunkworks team to support their programme of experimentation and innovation across the University."

Dr Woodward joins the University from GSK, where she was Head of Operations for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIML) in Research and Development. With a distinguished career in pharmaceutical R&D and operations, she has led large-scale transformation initiatives in regulated sectors and holds an impressive record as a digital business leader, celebrated for her expertise in data, machine learning, and AI.

On joining the University, Vicki said: “I am truly excited to join The University of Manchester and to lead a pioneering team dedicated to high-impact projects across every area of the institution. Making the transition from industry to academia marks an inspiring new chapter for me – after years of shaping AI strategy in regulated sectors, I am energised by the chance to apply that experience to empower researchers, students, and staff.

“The University has a world-class reputation for collaboration and societal impact, and the opportunity to accelerate cutting-edge AI adoption here is a privilege. I’m passionate about fostering an agile, creative culture that can rapidly turn bold ideas into real solutions. Together, our team will break down silos, share expertise, and deliver lasting value – ensuring Manchester remains at the forefront of responsible and innovative AI for both academia and the wider community.”
