Heating in University buildings

15 May 2024

The University plans to switch to summer heating mode this week commencing May 13th.

The heating season typically runs from October until May. During the Spring and Autumn periods, the Estates and Facilities directorate closely monitors weather forecasts to determine the optimal times to switch from the Summer and Winter heating modes, based on the average temperatures over any 14-day period.

Given the large and complex nature of these systems, it is necessary to forecast in advance to allow for a safe and planned adjustment. It will therefore not always possible to provide heating flexibility during this period.

Supporting our sustainability strategy

Our heating strategy aims to provide a fair balance between user comfort and the environmental impact of excessive running. We have already started working towards our zero carbon targets, with £160m of investment earmarked over the next 10 years. It is therefore important to ensure we do not waste any energy.

Furthermore, we politely ask that individual oil filled radiators, fan heaters, and coolers in offices are not used during this period, as they are energy inefficient and disrupt the effective operation of heating systems.

Occupiers are encouraged to report any localised issue experienced with heating and any heaters no longer required can be collected by the Estates Help Desk, who will ensure they are disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

Your support, co-operation, and understanding on this matter are much appreciated.
