‘Running for those who kept fighting’: One colleague’s third Purplewave

Challenge accepted by Alejandro
I’m Alejandro, a Reader in Circular Economy and Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, and Head of Environmental Sustainability and Engagement in the School of Engineering. This year, I’m taking part in the Purplewave for the third time, and I’m just as excited as I was the first.
For me, the Purplewave is the perfect combination of two things I care deeply about: staying active and contributing to a meaningful cause. There’s something special about running alongside colleagues, knowing that every step supports work that matters.
Why I’m Running
My motivation is personal - both of my parents are survivors of three cancers, and I’m incredibly thankful that research has allowed me to enjoy so many more years with them. That’s why I’m fundraising for cancer research here at the University of Manchester — the same cause I’ve supported in previous years.
It’s my way of giving back, and of helping ensure that more families get the same chance mine did.
Training and Fundraising
Training has been a little more challenging this time around — I recently became a father, which has brought plenty of joy and a slightly more unpredictable schedule. But I’m still super motivated, and making time to get out and run whenever I can.
Thinking About Signing Up?
My advice is simple: go for it. You’ll find a cause that means something to you, it’s great for your health and your mood, and the atmosphere on the day is incredible.
