Disability History Month

29 Nov 2022

Celebrating disability history

Manchester Academy lit up in purple

This month, we celebrate Disability History Month, and colleagues have the opportunity to recognise and appreciate our disability history at events taking place across the University.

Jackie Carter, Academic Lead for Disability, said: “Disability History Month gives us the opportunity to shine a spotlight on our disabled staff. As an inclusive organisation we want to celebrate everyone's contribution to our University community. I encourage everyone to take part in the events taking place during this month.”

What’s happening?

We are helping to mark the awareness month by lighting up the Academy for International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Saturday, 3 December.

About Disability History Month

UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) is an annual event focused on the history of disabled people’s fight for equality and human rights.

UKDHM 2022 takes place from Wednesday, 16 November until Friday, 16 December. This year the theme is Disability, Health and Wellbeing.

Disability network Co-Chair, Jessica Boland said “Disability History Month celebrates the amazing contributions disabled people make to not just our University and Manchester but society as a whole."
