In advance of the upcoming industrial action by the University and College Union (UCU), please find some information below for colleagues.
These are national disputes on pay and pension that we are not in a position to resolve on our own, or with our own staff. This action is regrettable and we had hoped it could have been avoided. Further information on the University’s position is given below.
The University fully respects the right of UCU members to take industrial action and we also recognise how important pay and pensions are to our colleagues. However, we will also seek to minimise disruption, especially to our students.
Dates of industrial action:
- Strike action 25-29 November 2019
- Strike action 2-4 December 2019
- Continuous action short of a strike from 25 November 2019, terminating no later than 29 April 2020
Industrial action by UCU Members
This message includes information on deductions from pay, action short of a strike, Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) rules (including a request form to stop USS contributions), Death in Service Cover and Ill Health Protection, and picket lines.
Communications with students
We are advising students to work on the basis that their studies will continue as normal unless they are told otherwise by their School. This means that they should attend scheduled teaching, complete and submit assessments by the relevant deadlines, and continue to plan for any examinations. The University will not benefit from any pay which is deducted and will instead use it for the benefit of our students.
Guidance to help colleagues in dealing with student queries will be issued shortly. Please share this with your colleagues as you feel appropriate.
