Introducing Essentials: Supporting our students through the cost of living crisis
27 Nov 2025
The Students’ Union has launched Essentials, a dedicated space to help students meet their basic needs during the ongoing cost of living challenges. This initiative is more than a service — it’s a lifeline for students who may be struggling.
What is Essentials?
Essentials provides free access to:
- Pantry and hygiene products
- Financial wellbeing and literacy workshops
- Kitchen and seating spaces
- Community events and drop-ins
It’s a judgment-free space where students can find support with food, hygiene, finances, and connection.
Why it matters
Across the UK, students are feeling the impact of rising costs. At Manchester, we’re taking action to ensure no student goes without essentials. This initiative reflects our commitment to student wellbeing and inclusion.
How colleagues can help
You play a vital role in making students aware of this support. Here’s how you can engage:
- Signpost students who may need help with food, hygiene, finances, or social connection
- Include the Essentials link in relevant newsletters or communications
- Stock info leaflets in your areas for conversations with students
Every interaction can make a difference.
Who can use it?
Essentials is open to all University of Manchester students — no referral needed.
When & Where
- Open: Monday to Friday, 10am – 4pm
- Location: Thorncliffe House, Oxford Road (4-minute walk from the Students’ Union building)
