Holocaust Memorial Day
27 Jan 2026
Listen, learn, and carry forward lessons from the past
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is marked on 27 January each year. The theme for 2026 is ‘Bridging Generations’ and is a call-to-action reminding everyone that the responsibility of remembrance lives on through all of us.
HMD encourages the world to remember and reflect on the 6 million Jews that were murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of others who were persecuted and murdered by the Nazis, including Roma, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ people, and more. It's also an opportunity to reflect on more recent genocides recognised by the UK government. Genocide is not confined to the history books, it is a present-day reality; listening to and sharing stories of previous generations and survivors is an important part of raising awareness.
Light the Darkness
At 8pm tonight (Tuesday 27 January), people across the nation will light candles in their windows to remember those who have been killed for their identity, and to stand against prejudice and hatred across the world happening today.
You can be part of the conversation online by sharing a photo of your candle and using the hashtags #HolocaustMemorialDay and #Lightthedarkness
