Staying healthy during flu outbreaks: guidance for colleagues
17 Dec 2025
Flu and other winter illnesses are currently on the rise, and local health partners are advising extra care over the coming weeks.
With upcoming holiday periods, disruption to some NHS services, and planned industrial action affecting resident doctors, it’s especially important that we all take simple steps to stay well and help protect health services.
What you can do to reduce the risk of flu and winter illness
Flu is highly infectious and spreads easily through coughs, sneezes and contact with contaminated surfaces. Following the NHS and Greater Manchester guidance can help protect you, your colleagues, and our wider community:
- Wash your hands regularly with warm water and soap, or use hand sanitiser when on campus
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue or the bend of your elbow
- Dispose of tissues promptly and clean your hands afterwards
- Clean shared spaces such as desks, kitchens and meeting rooms after use
- Let fresh air into indoor spaces where possible
- Consider wearing a face covering if you have symptoms and need to be around others
- Keep flu and other medications stocked at home as services may be reduced or closed during the festive season
If you have a high temperature or feel too unwell to carry out normal activities, please stay at home and keep in touch with your line manager.
Vaccinations and looking after yourself
If you are eligible, winter vaccinations remain one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and reduce pressure on health services. Alongside this, maintaining your wellbeing through regular movement, rest and healthy routines can support both physical and mental health during busy periods.
Supporting students and protecting services
Colleagues may also be supporting students who are unwell or concerned about access to healthcare. Please continue to signpost students to appropriate support via the Student Support pages, and encourage them to follow NHS guidance if they have flu-like symptoms.
By taking preventative steps and staying home when unwell, we can help limit the spread of infection, reduce pressure on local NHS services, and support each other during a challenging period.
- If you need further advice, the University Occupational Health Service can provide support via their Contact Us page.
Thank you for doing your part to help keep our University community well.
