What you need to do ahead of the festive break
09 Dec 2025
Key reminders for colleagues ahead of the festive break, including around car park closures and building closing/opening times.
1. Switch Off Electrics
Our University is committed to becoming carbon zero by 2038, and one way we can all help achieve this is by remembering to switch off non-essential electrical items. Please ensure that:
- All computers, monitors, and printers are turned off.
- Lights in your office and common areas are switched off.
- Any other non-essential electrical equipment is unplugged.
- Electric fan and convection heaters are not used as they pose a fire risk when switched on unattended without being PAT tested.
- Christmas trees and lights are UKCA or CE marked in good condition, turned off when unattended, away from hot items such as radiators and not connected by multiple extension leads.
Report any heating issues to the Estates Helpdesk.
2. Building Closing and Opening Times
Ensure that you have all necessary items and documents before the buildings close, as access will be restricted during this period.
Lab-based researchers wishing to work over the Christmas closure should refer to the local policy and procedure in their School/ Institute/ Division/ Department or equivalent.
Anyone with work requirement to be on campus during the closure period should refer to the University’s recent guidance on Lone Working and activate the SafeZone App.
3. Car Park Closures
Please note the following car park closures during the holiday period:
- Booth Street West Multi-Storey Car Park will be closed from 11.45pm on Tuesday, 23 December 2025, and reopen from 6.00am on Monday, 5 January 2025.
- The barriers at Cecil Street, Dilworth Street and Dover Street car parks will be raised or set to automatically open over Christmas.
4. Kitchen Fridges and Food Waste
To maintain cleanliness and hygiene, please make sure to:
- Clean out all items from the kitchen fridges.
- Dispose of any perishable food items.
- Use the correct bins for food waste disposal to support our recycling efforts.
- Turn off all taps and electrical items not in use.
5. Wear appropriate footwear on campus
Our gritting capabilities for car parks and wider campus is impacted during this period, so please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and sensible footwear when coming onto campus.
Thank you for your cooperation and have a wonderful break! If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact your local Facilities Management team.
