Congratulations to our interdisciplinary research award winners

University of Manchester Research Institute’s Interdisciplinary Research Pump-Prime Projects announced – we look forward to the advancements this collaborative work will bring to tackle society's most pressing global challenges.

The University of Manchester Research Institute’s (UMRI) Interdisciplinary Research Pump-Prime Call was created to encourage collaboration and provide support for activities that will lead to an increase in successful interdisciplinary research across the University.
Funds are awarded to proposals that aim to support and pump-prime new interdisciplinary research programmes which seek to release synergies between existing clusters of excellence.
Previous winners include the cross-faculty, interdisciplinary Building Safety Network (BSN), which brought together a community of scholars, industry experts, officials and representative bodies in the aftermath of the Grenfell fire. They sought to inform the future of building safety policy and practice through internationally excellent co-produced research following Dame Judith Hackitt’s Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, which uncovered systemic failings that undermined the safety of people living in high-rise residential buildings across the country. Air Space, a community-integrated network of interdisciplinary research on socio-atmospherics that brought together all three Faculties, Creative Manchester, the Morgan Centre and local residents, communities and groups. Research on air is siloed in disciplines where important issues have been developed and research advanced. This segregation of knowledge has led to lack of opportunities to synthesise and explore new possibilities for studying air and bringing about change in health, wellbeing and equality. The project worked with community groups Ardwick Climate Action, Love Old Trafford, Manchester Climate Alliance and Sackville Gardens Friends Association to scope their agendas concerning the local community and environment and place them into context with existing literature on air and atmospherics.
