The 2023 National Student Survey (NSS), a survey undertaken by final year higher education students across the UK, will see significant changes this year compared to previous years.

Managed by the Office for Students (OfS), the NSS offers students an opportunity to feedback on their courses and provide their view on a range of topics – from teaching, assessment and feedback and support to resources and how they feel they’ve been listened to  during their time at university.

Following a consultation and review by the OfS, changes have been made to the 2023 survey including adjusted core survey questions and a new four-point response scale. These changes mean that no comparisons will be possible with previous years

There are two new questions for 2023:

  • How well communicated was information about your university/college's mental wellbeing support services?
  • During your studies, how free did you feel to express your ideas, opinions, and beliefs?

Three questions are being removed for 2023:

  • The timetable works efficiently for me
  • I feel part of a community of staff and students
  • Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the course (English institutions only – this has been retained as an optional question by the University of Manchester)

Results will be published at sector and provider levels but with significant changes to the approach to question scores and grouping, the student characteristics the results are broken down by, and definitions used in benchmarking measures.

NSS is one of the most important ways we gather feedback from students about their experience of studying and living in Manchester. It provides insights into students’ opinions about the quality of their courses that are used both locally and at sector level to help measure quality and make enhancements.

Full results will be made available on Thursday, 10 August. Please contact the Taught Programme Enhancement Team in Teaching and Learning Delivery for further information: teachingandlearningsurveys@manchester.ac.uk.
