International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

17 May 2023

IDAHOBIT is on Wednesday, 17 May

International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

At our University we take a holistic approach that celebrates individuals and their many identities so that we are a truly inclusive organisation.

We aim to create an inclusive, diverse and accessible environment where it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure all members of our University community are treated with fairness, dignity, respect and have a sense of belonging.

We therefore invite you to help us mark the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) on Wednesday, 17 May at a number of events.

Patrick Hackett, Registrar, Secretary and Chief Operating Officer and ALLOUT ally, said “As Executive Sponsor for the LGBT Staff Network, I am committed to achieving full LGBT+ inclusion, recognising we still have lots to do for our non-binary and trans colleagues at Manchester. IDAHOBIT is not only a day for celebration, but, looking ahead, also an opportunity for raising awareness of the inclusion work that remains to be done – so please take the time on 17 May to think about how we can all work together and ensure that our LGBT+ colleagues feel safe, included and respected on campus.”

LGBT+ networking event

12-2pm on Wednesday, 17 May in 3A.071 in Engineering Building A.

This event is co-hosted by ALLOUT LGBT+ Staff Network & FSE's EDIA Team.

All LGBT+ staff are invited for free refreshments, nail painting, mindfulness colouring, card games and more.

HollyZone Talk on a Queer History of Britain

Our neighbours at Manchester Metropolitan University have invited all University of Manchester colleagues to join their Rainbow Network’s event presenting a HollyZone Talk on a Queer History of Britain.

Podcast series

Our It Gets Better podcast series features gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans members of staff as well as people whose intersectionalities have affected their experiences of coming out.

We’re encouraging people to tweet with their preferred LGBT+ flag using @UoMLGBT and #IDAHOBIT2023

ALLOUT is a fully inclusive staff network that welcomes all lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and non-binary staff as well as anyone who may have an interest or wish to support colleagues, friends and relatives.

ALLOUT has a number ofsubgroups which bring together intersections of the LGBT+ community (including LGBT+ people of faith and non-binary colleagues).

IDAHOBITis also an opportunity to remind us of the ways that allies can support LGBT+ colleagues and students.

Allies are defined as individuals who do not identify as LGBT+ and who believe that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people should experience full equality in the workplace.
