Manchester best in Europe in Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings

03 Apr 2019

The rankings recognise universities across the world for their social and economic impact

Sustainable Development Goals

In this pioneering initiative led by the Times Higher Education, universities are ranked based on the 17 United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

More than 500 universities around the world entered, and The University of Manchester was ranked as the best higher education institution in Europe and third in the world.

Launched in 2016, the SDGs are upheld by 193 Member States of the United Nations. Our ranking is in support of 10,000 Actions, our promise to make a difference, individually and collectively, in tackling one of the world’s greatest challenges.

Dr Julian Skyrme, Director of Social Responsibility who led the University’s entry, said: “The UN Sustainable Development Goals are our world’s call to action on the most important challenges facing our people and planet.

"Being recognised as Europe’s highest ranking University in this new index – and third in the world overall – is a brilliant reflection of the work of our researchers, teachers, professional services and cultural institution staff, enhancing our global reputation as a leader on social responsibility and impact.”
