Explore the materials that make up mediaeval manuscripts

Come along to Materials Matter, an all-day event on Friday, 2 November at The John Rylands Library.

This series of events and activities will explore the materials used in the creation of wonderful objects from the Library’s collections, as part of the Manchester Science Festival:

10.30am-11.30am
Saving for the future: consolidation, conservation and digitisation

Discover how our collections are made accessible whilst being safeguarded from risk of damage and deterioration. Booking is essential.

12 noon-1pm & 2-3pm
“Illuminations!”

Collection encounters exploring some of the Library’s medieval manuscripts, but concentrating on the materials which make up the items rather than their content, from the vellum pages to the lapis-lazuli illuminations. Booking is essential.

11am-3pm
Make your own medieval manuscripts: family friendly workshop

Come along and try your hand at medieval style illuminated lettering and illustration. Fun for all ages and abilities! All welcome, no need to book.
