International students who need to register with the police

21 Sep 2011

Changes to the process after Friday 23 September

During Orientation and Welcome Week the University has been providing appointments for those students who are required to register with the local police.

From Friday 23 September this service will no longer be available. If a student comes to you for advice on how to register with the police, they should:

  • Firstly check their visa to see if they are required to register. If they are, their visa will have words to the effect “Register with the police within seven days” printed on it. Only certain countries’ citizens are required to register, and nobody who is here for less than six months is required to register.
  • Those students who do need to register should contact the International Visitor Registration Office at Bootle Street Police Station directly preferably by email to gmp.ivro@gmp.police.uk
  • They need to give their name and the nature of their enquiry, e.g. new registration, change of address. They will receive a reply within 48 hours.

If a student is particularly anxious, they can telephone 0161 856 3320. However, they will receive no written confirmation of an appointment if they telephone.

Students should not go directly to Bootle Street without an appointment, as they will most likely be turned away.
