Diploma in Management and Leadership Level 5 Award

04 Jan 2011

Replacement qualification for PCMS - information session on Wednesday 12 January 2011

STDU are replacing the Professional Certificate in Management Studies with a new course - The Diploma in Management and Leadership (Edexcel Level 5).

The new DMLS will be offered through STDU by Stockport College of Further & Higher Education. The course leads to a nationally recognised qualification in Management Studies and the award is accredited by EDEXCEL / BTEC.

Those staff who are interested are invited to attend an information session on Wednesday 12 January, 1-1.30pm, at the Staff Training and Development Unit. This session will be an opportunity to learn more about the course before applying for a place. Places for the information session can be booked online at MS4a: DMLS information session.

The course is designed to provide an opportunity for staff to gain a recognised qualification in management studies. It is particularly suitable for practising junior / middle managers or those who wish to make a career in management.

The qualification aims to:

  • Develop the skills of practising managers and those aspiring to management positions
  • Promote good practise in management
  • Provide a progression route to more advanced management qualifications
  • Provide staff with the basis for further development

This is a new qualification and the detail of each unit is currently being devised. However, in order to achieve the Diploma, participants will be required to complete the following six units:

  • Principles of Management and Leadership
  • Managing Communications at Work
  • Personal Development
  • Management of Change
  • Managing Projects
  • Managing Staff Performance

The programme is delivered over one year. Attendance is one half-day each week (Wednesday, 9.30am-12.30pm) at the Staff Training and Development Unit. This year’s programme begins on Wednesday 9 March 2011. Participants are required to negotiate attendance with their manager. It is important that managers and operational units are aware of the long-term commitment involved. Registration and attendance require the same commitment as with any similar programme funded through the STDU’s Further Education Programme and are subject to the same conditions.

An application form is available online at:

The closing date for applications is Friday 11 February 2011.

Applicants are required to attend an informal interview as part of the application process. The interviews are planned for the week beginning 21 February 2011. Exact date and times will be agreed with applicants.
