Participate in sneak preview of sell-out performance art show

Wednesday 1 July, 11am – 3pm

The Whitworth Art Gallery is offering the chance of a sneak preview of the sell-out performance art show Marina Abramović Presents..., one of the highlights of the Manchester International Festival. This is a strictly limited offer only available to staff of The University of Manchester, and is not open to the general public.

Marina Abramović is the curator and lead artist of this epic exhibition of performance art. Unprecedented in Britain, it features some of the most innovative performance artists working today. The exhibition begins with an hour-long performance initiation by Marina Abramović leading up to a series of encounters between artists and audience. Provocative and visceral in its intent, this exhibition demands much from its artists and viewers.

Featuring: Marina Abramović, Ivan Civic, Nikhil Chopra, Amanda Coogan, Marie Cool Fabio Balducci, Yingmei Duan, Eunhye Hwang, Jamie Isenstein, Terence Koh, Alastair MacLennan, Kira O'Reilly, Fedor Pavlov-Andreevich, Melati Suryodarmo, Nico Vascellari.

Rules of engagement

This long durational performance requires a dedicated commitment from artists and participants. The following guidelines are designed to create the best conditions for audiences and artists.

  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to stated start time to guarantee your place.
  • We ask that the audience remain with us for four hours.
  • Coats and bags must be checked in the cloakroom. Use of mobile phones or electronic devices is not permitted in the Gallery.
  • Each audience member will be issued with a lab coat so that they become part of the collective experience.
  • The audience should wear comfortable clothes and shoes that allow them to move with ease.
  • There will be no interval or break in the performance but the audience will be provided with water, biscuits and fruit.
  • No photography is permitted but each member of the audience will be offered a notepad and pencil to record experiences, as we welcome their responses. In leaving a response audience members agree that this can become part of the event's documentation.

The performance will commence with an hour-long collective experience with Marina Abramović. All other performances will take place for the duration of the event.
