Whitworth Art Gallery wants your shoes!

29 May 2009

Donate all types (in any condition) 8-15 June

Your unwanted shoes could turn into a work of art, as the Whitworth Art Gallery is calling for over 700 old pairs to be donated for a very unusual show. This celebrity-sized collection of footwear will 'feeture' in the Manchester International Festival exhibition Marina Abramovic Presents... at the Whitworth between 3 and 19 July.

The gallery will accept all types of shoes in any condition, and they can be handed in at the Whitworth between 8 and 15 June.

To meet with the gallery's strict conservation standards, all donated shoes will first travel to Liverpool where they will be cleansed in a giant deep freeze at -30 degrees. The exact details are still under wraps about how the shoes are then going to be used, but they will form the centrepiece of a unique live art performance. Despite the art show being all about endurance, and lasting a full four hours at a time, tickets are already selling fast. So if you want to find out where your shoes end up then get your skates on!

The Whitworth Art Gallery is on Oxford Road, opposite Manchester Royal Infirmary. Shoes can be handed in from Monday 8 June during the gallery’s opening times:

  • 10am – 5pm, Monday to Saturday
  • 12 – 4pm, Sunday

All shoes are needed by 15 June. Shoes will not be returned.

Tickets for Marina Abramovic Presents... are free but must be booked online at:
