New Manchester Gallery opening 4 April

Celebrate the opening of our new Manchester Gallery on Saturday 4 April. Uncover the connections between the people of Manchester, the city, and the Museum's historic collection.

The stories behind the Museum’s objects and the journeys that have brought them to Manchester, often mirror the journeys of people and communities coming into the city today. Explore the Museum’s history and Manchester's changing environment through a wide selection of objects.

Come face-to-face with Maharajah, an Asian elephant that walked to Manchester from Edinburgh in 1872 to become the star attraction at Belle Vue Zoo. See a set of Zulu spears captured by a member of the Manchester regiment during the revolt against British colonial rule in 1906. Get up close to a Roman Altar which was found in Manchester earlier last year during building excavations.

Find out about the people behind the Museum's collection – from working class to wealthy collectors, academics and British soldiers.

Goodbye Lindow Man

Join us in saying a fond farewell to Lindow Man.

Lindow Man is the name given to a bog body discovered in a Cheshire peatbog in 1984. Find out what he means to us today in the award-winning exhibition Lindow Man: A bog body mystery.

Why not join our Museum court and examine the evidence surrounding his death in Lindow Man: the verdict on Saturday 4 April.

Lindow Man: A bog body mystery recently won a Design Week award. Don’t miss your last chance to see the exhibition before 19 April 2009.

Find out more about Lindow Moss, the place where Lindow Man was discovered in our photography exhibition Lindow Moss: A place of finding until 12 July 2009.
