Lindow Man: A bog body mystery from 19 April and Well-Being Week events 22-24 April.
Opening this Saturday Lindow Man: A bog body mystery at The Manchester Museum
19 April 2008 - 19 April 2009
The discovery of the preserved body of a man in a peat bog at Lindow Moss, Cheshire in 1984 raised many questions. The man at the centre of the story still remains a mystery, despite the efforts of curators, archaeologists, historians and forensic scientists.
Lindow Man: A bog body mystery looks at the different angles to Lindow Man's story through the voices of seven people. Exploring a variety of perspectives, the stories include those of a peat digger, forensic archaeologist, museum curator and Druid priest, amongst others. Their personal experiences provide us with an insight into the impact he has had on their lives.
"Lindow Moss was somewhere I'd been walking, playing but very familiar with all through childhood and suddenly they've made this discovery of a body& Lindow Man to me is just one big question that needs a lot of answers & I'd like to see him back here and get some more answers & this is our neighbour."
Susan Chadwick, Former member of Lindow Primary School choir
Some of the objects in the exhibition will have obvious links to Lindow Man, others may seem unexpected. All of them have been chosen to show the many sides of Lindow Man and what he means to us today.
Lindow Man and selected objects are on loan from the British Museum as part of its Partnership UK Scheme. This exhibition has been made possible through the generous support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Wellcome Trust, Renaissance in the Regions, The Foyle Foundation and the Dorset Foundation.
