Process underway to replace Blackboard Learn

19 Apr 2023

In August last year, our University began the process of procuring a new Central Learning Environment (CLE) system to replace Blackboard Learn, as part of the Flexible Learning Programme

Implementing a new CLE system can take several years, and since Blackboard Learn is due for renewal in 2025, it was important to start the procurement process as early as possible - ensuring that students can continue to access a rich and engaging learning experience.

To ensure our requirements meet the needs of those who will use the new CLE, the project team drafted the tender document using feedback from staff and students generated through engagement sessions held last year.

What happens next?

The tender went live on Thursday 31 March, and suppliers will be able to review the information and submit their responses to the tender before Friday 5 May 2023. A tender panel, with representation from across the University, will evaluate all responses received and select the top three suppliers.

Over the summer of 2023, staff and students will have the opportunity to get involved by testing the usability and accessibility of these three systems. The tender panel will then analyse the feedback received using a bespoke evaluation framework to identify a supplier who can meet the needs of staff, students, and the University as a whole, and who can help the University successfully migrate to the chosen CLE.

The contract will be awarded in October 2023, and the new system will be fully implemented by September 2025. We will continue to provide regular updates on this project as it progresses over the coming months.
