Using Teams v Zoom

09 Jun 2022

Microsoft Teams Functionality

Microsoft work together

Microsoft Teams (Teams) is the University’s first choice platform for messaging and video conferencing. If you are a Zoom user who has concerns that Teams does not offer the same features, we encourage you to try out Teams to experience the drastic improvements!

For example, Teams now has breakout rooms, it allows external guests to take part, and you do not need to have the desktop application to join a Teams meeting. You can join online, the same as with Zoom. Follow our step-by-step breakout rooms video for further information.

Teams has many advantages over Zoom due its integration with Microsoft 365 (M365) applications, and the numerous accessibility features that it offers.

We have heard from some colleagues that they believe sound and video quality is better on Zoom.

If you have experienced issues a number of these can be fixed by amending your settings. Please review our dedicated Knowledge Base article.

We also have experienced security issues with Zoom, (aka Zoom Bombing, where user sessions are interrupted by the inclusion of inappropriate material from an outside source). We recommend that you use Teams if you are holding discussions about restricted or sensitive data – please view our protocol for using Teams with Highly Restricted data

Visit our dedicated site to find out more about the features of Teams and other M365 applications:

How can I access Microsoft 365 applications?

As well as the desktop applications on your device, you can also access web versions of these and other M365 applications online.
