Updated policy on the use of animals in research and teaching activities

24 May 2022

Ensure you are familiar with the updated policy if you carry out research or teaching activities involving animals or animal tissues/cells

The purpose of our policy is to explain the procedures scientists must follow when using animals or animal tissues/cells in research and teaching activities. It also clarifies the responsibilities of those who involve animals in University activities and the key University roles in overseeing these activities.

This policy sets out the principles upon which all University activities involving animals should be conducted and defines which activities require ethical review. Depending on the nature of the work, ethical review will take place by the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB) or one of its sub-committees.
