Creating Library services to deliver Imagine2030

Dear colleagues

I am writing to update you on the final phase of the Library Reshaping Project (LRP) which has delivered changes to the way our Library is organised and has resulted in a number of staffing changes.

In March 2021, in line with our University’s policy on Introducing Organisational Change, a consultation process began with all three of the recognised campus trade unions on the LRP proposals, which included consultation in respect of both voluntary severance and compulsory redundancy.

In accordance with these processes, the University first offered voluntary severance to those who were ‘at risk’ of redundancy and 24 applications were accepted based on business needs, taking into consideration their skills and experience.

Unfortunately we did not meet the required reduction in all of the Library’s directorates as insufficient applications for voluntary severance were received in some areas. Therefore, we have moved in to the compulsory redundancy process in order to reshape the Library as agreed with our University. I can assure you that we remain committed to avoiding compulsory redundancy where possible and we are carefully exploring all opportunities with each member of staff who is at risk as set out in our Security of Employment Policy and as agreed with the trade unions. Opportunities for redeployment will continue to be sought until 24 September 2021 in the hope that compulsory redundancy will be avoided in some cases.    

I recognise that this is a difficult and anxious time for those staff in affected areas and I would like to thank Library staff for their professionalism and patience. All changes involving people that are undertaken by our University are given very careful and serious consideration and we would like to reaffirm our commitment to on-going, meaningful dialogue and engagement with colleagues at all levels as we continue to work to deliver the strategic vision for the Library.  

With our new structure now in place we will begin to focus on strengthening the Library’s sector-leading reputation by delivering our Imagine2030 vision and supporting the University’s Our future strategy.
