New guidance for subtitling videos

26 Feb 2021

It is now a requirement that all videos published on our websites via YouTube and the University portal are subtitled

This is to ensure that as many people as possible can access this content, including those with auditory impairments. This is not only the right thing to do but a necessary step to meet web accessibility regulations that came into force last year.

A new guidance page on Staffnet provides more information on this topic and detailed instructions on how to add subtitles to videos uploaded to YouTube and the University Portal.

These two platforms have a useful feature that adds automatic subtitles to all uploaded videos. Although these are a good starting point, they are not perfect, so please ensure that any automatically generated subtitles are checked and edited before going live.

If you are publishing audio-only content, such as a podcast, you need to provide a transcript as a downloadable PDF document.

To find out more about the web accessibility regulations, and to check what other changes you may need to make to your website or web content to conform with these regulations, visit our web accessibility page.

If you have any questions, please contact the digital team in your Faculty or Directorate.
