An update on the modernisation of our University network

18 Jun 2020

After several months of planning, the upgrades of the University’s data centres took place last weekend

Over the weekend of 13 and 14 June, colleagues from all across IT Services and our network partners Roc Technologies worked to upgrade our data centres, and tested our services once the upgrade had completed.

The work was completed on time and to schedule, despite the challenges of having to maintain social distancing and the requirements for our colleagues (working in the data centres) to wear full PPE.

The new technology has set the foundation on which we can continue to achieve our vision of a digital University, as more than ever, technology is key to our work, study and research.

Key facets of these improvements are a better resilience, and an improved capacity to handle the increasing data needs for study, research, work and leisure.

In terms of what’s coming next, we plan to shortly replace ageing equipment in Owens Park and Victoria Park, and we have further work to do on upgrading our Wi-Fi service across campus, which includes localised work in buildings over the coming weeks and months. We are working closely with Estates colleagues on this, and as ever, we will keep you updated.
