Car park charging increases

10 Mar 2020

Following the announcement on 11 February 2020 regarding increases in car park charges, we wanted to provide an update regarding the changes which will be implemented prior to and from 1 August 2020

Staff permit parking and residential campus car parking

The Car Parks Office are working with colleagues in HR and Finance to implement the increases in Staff Permit Parking, which will take effect from 1 August 2020.

Pay As You Go (21 Hit) parking

Prices will increase from £26.50 to £53.00 for 21 passes from 1 August 2020.

Car share

The University Car Share Scheme is designed for two current permit holders looking to switch to one permit (with access on one card only). Car Share Permits are currently priced at £20 per month and will increase to £34 per month from 1 August 2020.

Visitor parking charges

The parking charges at Charles Street Car Park (A), Booth Street West Car Park (D), Cecil Street Car Park (E) and Dilworth Street Car Park (F) will be increased in line with flexible charging systems at local car parks. The prices at all car parks will increase from Wednesday, 1 April 2020 as per the below table:

Monday to Sunday

  • Up to 1 hour - £2.00
  • Up to 2 hours - £4.00
  • Up to 3 hours - £6.00
  • Up to 5 hours - £7.00
  • Up to 6 hours - £8.00
  • Up to 8 hours - £9.00
  • Up to 10 hours - £10.00
  • Up to 24 hours - £15.00

Parking for invited visitors

If you are a staff member inviting a visitor (or visitors) to the University for a meeting, lecture or other event, you can organise parking for them by making arrangements with the Car Parks Office in advance.  Parking currently costs £5 per day and will be increasing from 1 April 2020 to £7.50 per day. These bookings must be made in advance and received no later than 3pm on the working day prior to the parking request.

ULEV discount

The LEV Scheme, which offered a discount to those driving cars emitting less than 110g CO2/km, has now ceased for new users. Those already registered with the scheme will continue to receive their discount until they change their car. The new ULEV Scheme, offering a 50% discount to those driving cars emitting less than 50g CO2/km is now active and to register for the scheme a V5 Certificate must be brought to the Permit Office. The Car Parks Office will contact existing LEV Scheme users and ULEV Scheme users annually to request a copy of the V5 Certificate for their car and this must be presented each year to retain the discount.

Postgraduate parking permits

Applications for Postgraduate Parking Permits will now only be accepted from Postgraduate Research (PGR) Students. Current Postgraduate Taught (PGT) car parking agreements will be honoured. The Car Parks Office will be contacting PGT Students who are currently on the waiting list to inform them of the changes which means future spaces cannot be offered.

Parking for tenants, commercial contractors, Students’ Union, Academy, Contact Theatre and long term contractors

The increases in charges for these users will be implemented from 1 August 2020. Permit holders are being contacted directly with details of the price increases.
