Join in this year's Greater Manchester Engineering Challenge (GMEC)
28 Nov 2019
The Greater Manchester Engineering Challenge (GMEC) is in it's third year, find out how you can get involved
This aims to inspire and engage primary and secondary pupils into engineering by setting a series of challenges based around the Engineering Design Process which introduce the pupils to Engineering Habits of Mind (EHoMs) – how engineers think and work.
This year, the theme of the challenge is:
ExtraOrdinary Spaces - Engineering out the problems of today for a sustainable tomorrow.
Within this theme, the pupils are going to be set a series of challenges based around designing a sustainable community that promotes wellbeing.
This year’s GMEC has two main events:
- an Immersion event for around 60 teachers from across Greater Manchester schools organised at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester on Tuesday, 3 December. The aim of the Immersion Day is to provide teachers with model examples of sustainable structures and explain how these have been conceived with a view to the teachers being able to deliver these messages back to the pupils in their class.
- a Pupil Challenge Day in March (Tuesday 11, March) where groups of children are invited to The University for the day to engage in a create and build activity to consolidate the work they have done.
We would like engineers from the University of Manchester to be involved by working with teachers at our immersion event on Tuesday 3, December. Engineers would not be required to pre-plan anything. You would just need to turn up and complete the activities alongside the teachers/pupils and along the way provide their expertise in terms of engineering and the engineering design process.
As there is a focus on civil engineering and sustainability this year and it would fantastic if we could have some engineers from this area. However, we are happy with engineers from any background as they would all have knowledge of the engineering design process.
If you would like to be involved in this event, or the pupil challenge day then please email email@example.com
