Get your free phish and chips at the Students' Union

28 Oct 2019

To mark National Cyber Security Awareness Month, the IT Marketing and Communications team have organised a phishing awareness campaign for University staff and students.

The campaign aims to provide staff and students with information and advice about:

  • what email phishing is;
  • tactics online fraudsters may use to try and fool you;
  • the dangers and impact of phishing;
  • how to report suspect emails.

We’ve planned two interactive outreach events and will be promoting video content online and through our social media channels.

Can you spot a phishing email?

On Tuesday 29 October and Wednesday 30 October, IT Services will be hosting a pop-up event in the Students' Union from 11.45am to 1.45pm. We'll be there to guide you through an online phishing quiz, and in exchange for your efforts you’ll be treated to a free scoop of Ben & Jerry’s ‘phish food’ ice cream (Tuesday only), or a free portion of ‘phish and chips’ (Wednesday only).

New cyber videos

Why not watch our new cyber security videos and learn more about phishing and online scams:

  • Student Guide to Scams’ – providing an insight into how social media and digital technology can be used to scam students.
  • What is phishing’ – an overview of what phishing is and what it can look like.

Why are we doing this?

Phishing tactics are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with fraudsters seeking financial gain, your personal data and intellectual property – this campaign is just one of the things we are doing to help our staff and students stay safe online.

The campaign has been supported by colleagues in the Department of Computer Science and funded by The Institute of Coding.

Test your phishing knowledge

Please do visit us at the Students' Union on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 October, from 11.45am to 1.45pm. No need to book, just turn up!
