Junk email filtering - Update 5

13 Apr 2017

The new junk mail scanning system is now in place, with a database for our intelligent scanning system to work with

For background information, please see the previous StaffNet articles:

We continue to add the email sent to the university’s phishing list to the database to improve its accuracy; at the moment between 150 and 300 emails a day are being added to the database.

We believe this had led to an increased hit rate on the explicit junk mail we’ve seen, although we’re now seeing an increase in financial phishing and junk email. As ever, please be cautious with any email you receive at any time related to payment of bills or money transfers.

We’re still working on the new process to allow staff to directly submit junk email to the scanning database and plan to provide guidelines on this before the end of next week (Friday 21 April). In the meantime, please continue to report phishing emails with the instructions on our Phishing advice web page.

Next week’s update is planned to be the final weekly update on this topic.
