Media Services Virtual Reality Live Streaming

14 Dec 2016

Media Services provide live video streaming services to the University and can broadcast professional HD video from virtually anywhere on campus

Graduation virtual reality

By live streaming the graduation ceremonies currently under way, we can allow the thousands unable to attend to watch their friends and family member’s big day. Each ceremony has hundreds of viewers and is watched all over the world.

Media Services have now also introduced a 360° Virtual Reality live stream to enable remote viewers to attend virtually. To achieve this, the output of numerous cameras are stitched together and streamed live to YouTube. Using a pair of Google Cardboard compatible VR goggles or dedicated VR headsets such as the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift, you can feel as if you are immersed in the ceremonies from within Whitworth Hall itself.

Even without specialist headsets, the 360° video can be viewed on any web browser. Experience this for yourself while a ceremony is live at:

In addition, the live ceremonies are being broadcast to the large LED screen on the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons, complemented by a new and powerful external PA system.
