Improvements to junk email filtering

We’ve made some changes to reduce spam in your mailbox

The University’s staff email service receives more than 200,000 junk emails per day.

While our email systems block almost all of these unwanted messages, changes in the way these ‘spammers’ operate have resulted in some junk emails slipping through the net.

In addition to being a nuisance, these junk mail messages often contain offensive or malicious content such as viruses and other malware.

To reduce the amount of junk mail you receive, we’ve made some changes to our staff email service. Previously, all email from other UK universities was exempt from our junk mail filters. Now, we’re filtering all external email.

We’ve also made our tests slightly stricter, to a level where much more of this ‘new’ spam will be detected while still classifying very few legitimate emails as spam.

These changes will help to deal with the junk mail problem, however it also means there is a slightly increased chance of legitimate email being identified as junk, so you should remember to regularly check that folder.
