Images

The PSRS image competition provides a platform for postgraduate researchers to present their research in a single photograph. The overall theme of ‘Research in action’ can be interpreted as broadly as students would like. However, with Manchester hosting this year’s EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF 2016), we are particularly keen to accept submissions which tie in with the core themes of this international event. More details about these themes can be found on the ESOF 2016 website. Each of the 15 shortlisted images will be judged by a high profile judging committee who will choose an overall winner and a runner up.

There will also be a ‘People’s Choice’ award based on votes cast by visitors to the PSRS showcase. A cash prize of £150 will be awarded to the winner, £100 to the runner up and £50 to the ‘People’s Choice’ image. If your students would like to participate in this year’s image competition, please encourage them to submit their image along with a title and a short caption of up to 150 words via the following link: http://www.psrs.manchester.ac.uk/participate/ The deadline for submissions is 20 May 2016.

Films

Increasingly, videos are being used for academic purposes, and can be used to promote research.  The 'story of my research' videos are an excellent and rare opportunity for researchers to reflect critically on their own personal stance, and how their journey bears on the outcome of their research overall. Each short film will be judged by a high profile judging committee who will award a cash prize of £200 to the winner, £150 to the runner up and £100 to the highly commended submission.

Please note that it is NOT a requirement that submitted short videos are of high visual quality, videos filmed on a mobile phone will suffice. What is important is the overall research ‘story’. Films must be submitted along with a title via the following link:http://www.psrs.manchester.ac.uk/participate by 20 May.

Posters

Poster presentations are a fantastic way of explaining and promoting research. All postgraduate researchers from across the University of Manchester are invited to present a poster about their work. Each poster will be judged by a team of both academic and non-academic University staff, and a cash prize of £150 will be awarded to the best poster from each faculty. The deadline for submissions to the poster exhibition is 20 May via http://www.psrs.manchester.ac.uk/participate Please note that the actual poster is not required until the event itself.

This year’s event will take place on Thursday 30 June 2016 and will feature over 200 poster presentations, as well as short films, images and, new for 2016 a 3D research model competition.

As last year, a light lunch will also be provided.

If you have any questions about the showcase or submissions, please email: psrs@manchester.ac.uk
