Staff volunteers needed for Sustainability Challenge 2016

12 May 2016

Would you like to help deliver the Sustainability Challenge 2016 to all 8,000 1st year students?

The Sustainability Challenge is part of the University’s Ethical Grand Challenges programme and from September 2016 will be a core element of the UoM Welcome.

We are looking for enthusiastic and approachable members of academic and PSS staff from all parts of the University, including the library and cultural institutions, and PGR students, to take on a number of roles:

  • Facilitators to work directly with groups of students taking part in the Challenge;
  • Event Staff to direct students to rooms and help with the running of the event;
  • Technical Support to provide additional AV support alongside building technicians (some IT knowledge required but a briefing will be provided).

Volunteers on last year’s Challenge said that they really enjoyed the opportunity to work with colleagues and students from across the university. It's also a great way to develop new skills and to be part of the distinctive offer of the University.

The Challenge is a 2.5 hour simulation exercise, based on the fictitious University of Millchester’s new Campus East Development. Students will work in interdisciplinary groups to plan the new campus, in the context of changes to climate policy to address extreme weather events around the world.

The Sustainability Challenge will take place in the morning and afternoon on Tuesday 20th September in 9 buildings across the Oxford Road campus.

The time commitment involved will depend on which role you would like to volunteer for. Facilitators will be required to attend a training session in early September. Staff volunteering for other roles will be provided with a role overview and a full briefing. We will also run some information sessions for staff who would like to find out more about the Sustainability Challenge which will be advertised shortly.
