University marks International Women’s Day with a series of events

International Women's Day 2016

The University is celebrating International Women’s Day with a series of events.

One is a special reception and panel discussion hosted by our President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, to mark the achievements of women connected to the University and the region.

Held on International Women’s Day itself (Tuesday, 8 March), it will feature inspirational speakers including Professor Margot Brazier OBE, one of the foremost medical Lawyers in the UK, Naa Acquah, General Secretary of the Students Union, and Janette Faherty OBE, Chairperson of Digital Youth Academy and one of the UK’s top entrepreneurs, who is passionate about making a difference and improving people’s life chances.

The event – in the Whitworth Hall, 6.30-8.30pm – welcomes both male and female alumni, University staff and students, and friends of the University.

Another event is the Faculty of Life Sciences Women in Science Conference 2016: Becoming the Best, again on Tuesday, 8 March, 10.30am-noon.

The programme of events will see women in Science and Engineering discuss strategies that help in advancing their careers and feature panellists such as Dr Heather Williams, Senior medical physicist for Nuclear Medicine at Central Manchester University Hospitals and Director of ScienceGrrl, and Ms. Angela Saini, science journalist, author and broadcaster, American Association for the Advancement of Science journalism award winner.

  • 'Wonder Women', an exhibition at The John Rylands Library, Thursday, 3 to Sunday, 13 March.
  • 'Pledge for Parity' lightning talks, hosted by Public Engagement at Manchester Museum, Friday, 4 March.
  • 'Women Inspiring Manchester', hosted by the Manchester Pharmacy School, Wednesday, 9 March.
  • 'Celebrating the History of Women in Mathematics at Manchester', hosted by the School of Mathematics, on Wednesday, 9 March.
