Bilal Majeed wins award

Manchester graduate Bilal Majeed has won the Entrepreneurial prize in Pakistan’s first ever Education UK Alumni Awards.

Bilal, who graduated with a Mechanical Engineering and Design MSc in 2009, won the award for his engineering design firm BMKDesign, which supports entrepreneurs across a range of design fields, from industrial and mechanical design to fashion and game development. His business is helping to create a culture of creativity and innovation in Pakistan’s design sector.

He joined a host of distinguished guests, 11 finalists and 500 guests at the ceremony in Karachi, which celebrated the accomplishments of university graduates across Pakistan who have achieved significant success after studying in the UK – the destination of choice for 7,000 Pakistani students each year.

Returning to Pakistan after graduating from Manchester, Bilal found very few companies operating in his field of design and development. So after gaining a wealth of experience on international design projects, he decided to do something that could have a profound impact on the sector. After building his company up from scratch, Bilal now manages industrial design projects in the US and UK, and he is now looking to build on this success and expand into the European market.

“I always felt there was unlimited potential in my country waiting to be unlocked and harnessed,” he explained. “With my start-up I am developing links with global companies to help provide opportunities for other professionals in Pakistan.

“The confidence and technical acumen I gained at the University of Manchester helps me work with clients from across the globe and deliver solutions that impact small and emerging businesses.”

British Council’s Area Director Sindh and Balochistan, and host of the ceremony, Robin Davies said: “We celebrate and congratulate the finalists for their outstanding professional success and contribution to Pakistan. The Education UK Alumni awards are all about honouring the success of UK alumni whose achievements in Pakistan have been to some extent influenced by their positive experiences of studying in the UK.”
