Windows Server 2003 disconnections

29 Jul 2015

As previously communicated, Microsoft ended support for Windows 2003 Server on Tuesday 14 July 2015.

This means no further security updates will be released for this Operating System.

We have already seen the release of a critical security patch for Windows platforms, which excludes Windows Server 2003.

To mitigate the risk posed by Windows 2003 servers on campus, we have restricted access to the network so the majority of these servers now have internal connectivity only.

Internet-facing services with approved exceptions have until Tuesday 15 September to upgrade, however, please note that there are serious increases in the amount of malicious activity on Windows Server 2003 and the extension may have to be brought forward if public exploits become available.

On Thursday 15 October,  Windows 2003 Servers will be disconnected from the campus network and no longer accessible on or off campus.

If any of your equipment is running Windows Server 2003, you must contact the IT Support Centre immediately to advise on your plans, timescales and any potential barriers for moving the service on to a supported platform, as it will be at risk of being completely disconnected from the network.
