Life Sciences invites the public to explore behind the scenes in its labs

The 5th annual Community Open Day organised by the Faculty of Life Sciences on Saturday, 9 May was a great success, with a record of 840 people attending the event
This year, on the Friday prior to our main Open Day, the Faculty invited 60 school children from Ravensbury Community School and the Cathedral School of St Peter and St John to come along and join in the activities.
Staff and students from the Faculty ran a series of interactive activities and opened a number of their laboratories so the public could find out what goes on behind the scenes!
Professor Amanda Bamford, Associate Dean for Social Responsibility, said, “It was great to see so many people in our building, enjoying the events and engaging with our staff. Many of the visitors I spoke to said what a welcoming and friendly place it was and how well organised the day had been. I think I speak for everyone involved in the day when I say it made us feel proud to be part of such an inspirational event.’’
Highlights on the day included the opportunity to find out why plants are green, paint with maggots, reconstruct jelly babies, the chance to meet our lab robots and our carnivorous plants, and see an interactive “Mad Science” show.
The support from volunteers within the Faculty was outstanding and the general consensus was that the event was “excellent!”
