Proposals to change the Redeployment Register

In order to deal with financial pressures and create the financial headroom required to invest in its strategic priorities, the University has begun a consultation about changing its practice in dealing with staff placed on the Redeployment Register indefinitely

The aim of the proposal is to limit the amount of time that staff can spend on the Redeployment Register and reduce the approximately £2 million per annum costs associated with the current practice.

The proposals also aim to ensure that the treatment of these staff is more consistent with those staff covered by Contracts Policy and Procedure, which involves employees on fixed-term or open ended contracts linked to finite funding and special projects.

The consultation will involve all of the campus trades unions and approximately 40 staff currently on the Redeployment Register who have been on the Register for three months or more.

If the proposals are implemented, the staff who have been on the Redeployment Register for three months or more at the implementation date would as a consequence be at risk of redundancy. The University therefore proposes to establish a voluntary severance scheme for these staff and if necessary a compulsory redundancy scheme.

The proposals are designed to ensure that a rigorous, fair and transparent process is applied to each individual on the Redeployment Register who is at risk of redundancy and include arrangements to explore opportunities for the avoidance of redundancy, including redeployment and retraining.
