Pictures tell a thousand words: what would your research picture say?

27 Apr 2015

A reminder to postgraduate students that the deadline for submitting images for PSRS 2015 is Friday, 8 May - don’t miss your chance to win £150!

Presenting your research as a single image represents a unique medium of engaging others in your research. By stripping away all the technical language and leaving behind the core question of your research, you can highlight its overall impact without having to explain all the technical details.

The theme for this year’s Image Awards is “Research in Action”. You are free to interpret this theme as broadly as you like. However, you must show how your photo represents your research and its impact, or potential impact, whether that is at the individual, local, national or international level. All images should be accompanied by a title (no more than 50 words) and a caption (no more than 150 words) both of which should clearly explain your image.

The deadline for submissions is 8 May 2015.

If you are interested in submitting a image but want some inspiration, below are two winning images from the 2013 “Images of Research” photography competition.

The picture on the left is entitled “Small loans, big dreams: fighting poverty, one loan at a time” by Asad Kamran Ghalib and was the overall winner from the 2013, whilst the picture on the right is entitled “Scientific Research: A Real Bed of Roses” by David J. Lewis and was the runner up from 2013.

Three winners, will be chosen:

  • Best overall image (£150)
  • Runner up (£100)
  • People's choice winner (£50)

The winners will be chosen by a panel of prestigious judges.

Poster showcase

The call for Poster submissions is now open!

The Poster Exhibition held annually during the showcase event brings together postgraduate researchers from across the four faculties of the University under one roof. It provides a great networking platform for researchers to explore interdisciplinary connections, whilst giving wider stakeholders the chance to understand the brilliant depth and breadth of research at Manchester.

The Showcase gives postgraduate researchers a supportive environment in which they can practise their presentation skills and gain invaluable feedback from both academic and non-academic judges.

The deadline for submissions is 15 May 2015.

You can submit your work and register for the Showcase here:
