Ways to help you save money getting healthier!

Many of you may be trying to be healthier in January so here are a few options that may save you money and improve your health and fitness at the same time!

Get Active

We have a fantastic range of facilities which offers you a varied and affordable sport, fitness and wellbeing programme. Some activities are free! The Semester 2 ACTIVE Manchester class timetable will commence 26th January2015 and the full timetable is detailed here with classes covering T’ai Chi, Yoga, Pilates and cardio work.

Sugden Sports Centre

The Sugden Sports Centre is conveniently situated in the centre of campus providing you with an ideal venue to keep fit and play sport around your work hours. They also offer discounted membership to University employees for the Fitness suite starting at £10.75 per month.

Simplyhealth scheme

You are able to access reduced rates on the Simplyhealth cash plan. This helps you budget for the cost of visiting the dentist, optician, physiotherapist and a number of other healthcare professionals. Whether it's a check-up, treatment or an emergency, Simplyhealth give you cash back, up to annual limits. Free health support

There are many useful links with free information to help you and your family get healthier including Change4Health, NHS and Simplyhealth who provide free links to assess and strengthen your resilience and information and exercises for your back care

Health Perkz

Visit Perkz or download the latest newsletter with details of how to enter January’s competitions (no purchase required) and the unique Perkz registration code. Perkz provide discounts at leading Kinetika and Living Well Health Clubs as well as sports equipment retailers including American Golf.

Staff discounts

You are also able to access numerous locally negotiated health and beauty discounts including British Military Fitness, FST Fitness, Urban Fitness and Chill Factore.

Save money on the purchase of bikes and cycling equipment

If you are considering alternative forms of transport to get fitter the University has a large (and growing) group of staff who regularly cycle to work. There are some good facilities available as well as the Cycle to Work Scheme that helps you save money on the purchase of bikes and accessories and just safety equipment only. To support bike users there are currently cycle shelters, cycle stands and shower facilities. For more information visit the cycling page. Many new buildings planned by the University will include shower and changing facilities as part of the University’s Travel Plan.

Entertainment

If you are just looking for more entertainment in the new year, offers are available for:

  • East is East at the Manchester Opera House starring Jane Horrocks. Gallery seats £10 each valid on Monday, 26 January;
  • Mercury Queen Tribute Night at The Palace on Thursday, 26 February 2015. Best available seats £10.00 includes stalls and circle.
