Behind the Black Door: working in the Civil Service

19 Nov 2014

Alex Aiken, Executive Director of Government Communications, along with recent recruits to the Civil Service Fast Stream, came to Manchester to speak to our students about the varied and interesting career options the Civil Service offers to graduates

Behind the Black Door

They were welcomed to the University by the President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, and the event was chaired by David Richards, Professor of Public Policy. Over 100 students and staff attended this unique event which was organised by the Careers Service.

Dr Paul Redmond, Director of Student Life said: “We are grateful to the Civil Service for sending us in recent weeks two very high profile speakers to meet our students – Alex Aiken and Professor Sir Mark Walport, Government Chief Scientific Adviser. Although the Fast Stream is incredibly competitive (approximately 30,000 applications for 1,000 places), our students should be heartened to know that there are alternative direct entry options. Our Careers Service hopes to run more events to raise the profile of the Civil Service on our campus.”
