All you need to know to help our new cohort settle in
It's the start of a new year and our newest cohort arrives on Monday - so get ready to give them a warm welcome.
Staff from across the University are proudly wearing their Ask Me badges and have been swotting up on the information they need to know in order to answer the many weird and wonderful questions that will come their way during Orientation and Welcome.
But here are the top five things you need to know in what is our most exciting week of the year.
If a student asks me a question, and I don't know the answer, where should I send them for help?
While you're walking around on campus wearing your Ask Me badge, you're bound to come across a question you're unsure of. Don't worry - there are dedicated Ask Me desks running between Tuesday 9 and Friday 19 September, located at:
- University Place
- Students' Union
- Reynold Building (from Monday, 15 September)
There are also Student Ambassadors purple hooded tops all over campus who can help.
For academic questions, students can be directed to their School office.
What is the most important thing students need to do during Welcome?
Registration. It's essential for both students and the University. International students also need to attend International Student Check-in, in Whitworth Hall.
Students can complete registration online, at their own pace, and from anywhere in the world, by visiting my.manchester.ac.uk and using the Registration portlet on their home tab.
They must register before 30 September. If they don't, they'll be liable for a £50 late registration charge. Once they've registered, students can collect their student card, from:
- Owens Park
- Main Library
- Whitworth Hall

What's going on for postgraduates?
Postgraduates have their own social events during Welcome, where than be assured of meeting others studying at their level:
- Night at the Museum: an evening of music, culture and dinosaurs, in the impressive surroundings of the Manchester Museum.
- Culture Crawl: a guided tour of Manchester’s cultural highlights ending at the famous Portico Library for drinks.

Where can staff find more information about Welcome?

If students only have time to go to one event, which one should I recommend?
Academic induction in Schools and Programmes is the most important part of Welcome week - students are here to study, after all. But assuming that students have been, or are going, to their induction, then the most important events are the fairs, on Tuesday, 16 September and Wednesday, 17 September.
Spread across the marquee at University Place and along Oxford Road around the Students' Union, the fairs are an opportunity to see, experience and meet the whole university experience in miniature: From University support services to student and sports societies, with plenty of freebies thrown in!
